GATE 2025 Overview

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee is organizing the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) for 2025. A new website for GATE 2025 has been launched at https://gate2025.iitr.ac.in/. GATE is a national-level examination that candidates can appear for if they have completed any government-approved degree program in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities, or if they are in their third or higher year of an undergraduate program. Interested candidates can fill out the GATE Application Form 2025 through the official portal after checking the eligibility criteria.

This examination will be conducted as a computer-based test comprising 30 tests. Eligible candidates can appear for a maximum of two papers. The test will include a general aptitude section and a section on the subject selected by the candidates. Candidates are advised to review the exam pattern and syllabus thoroughly to score well and secure admission to their desired courses.

What is GATE Exam?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India exam that evaluates candidates knowledge in various undergraduate subjects, such as engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, and humanities. The exam includes 30 subjects, and candidates can select up to two subjects based on their interests. The exam is conducted by IISC Bengaluru and seven IITs on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resources Development, National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, and Government of India.

Eligibility Criteria

IIT Roorkee has specified basic eligibility criteria for GATE 2025. Only eligible candidates will be allowed to sit for the examination.

  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in their respective subjects.
  • Candidates who have completed any government-approved degree program in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities, or are in their third or higher year of an undergraduate program, are eligible for GATE 2025.
  • Candidates pursuing or having completed their qualifying degree from a country other than India are also eligible, provided they have either completed or are in the third year of their bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, architecture, science, commerce, arts, or humanities.

Exam Pattern

The GATE 2025 exam will be conducted for a total duration of 180 minutes (3 hours) at respective examination centers. The selected subject section will include questions based on Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and/or Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions. For all 30 papers, the General Aptitude Test will be for 15 marks. There is no negative marking for MSQ/NAT questions, but marks will be deducted for wrong answers in MCQ questions. Specifically, 1/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong 1-mark MCQ and 2/3 marks will be deducted for each wrong 2-mark MCQ.

  • General Aptitude: 15 marks
  • Engineering Mathematics: 13 marks
  • Selected Subject: 72 marks
  • Total: 100 marks

For AR, CY, DA, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH, and XL:

  • General Aptitude: 15 marks
